We're using the Retail analysis sample, if you want to follow along. The Retail Analysis sample content pack used in this tutorial consists of a dashboard, report, and dataset. To familiarize yourself with this particular content pack and its scenario, see Retail Analysis sample for Power BI: Take a tour before you begin.

Open the Power BI service app. If you don't see Get Dataexpand the nav pane by selecting the following icon at the top of the pane:. With the sample content packs, when you select ConnectPower BI gets a copy of that content pack and stores it for you in the cloud. Because the person who created the content pack included a dataset, a report, and a dashboard, that's what you get when you select Connect.

Open the Reports tab. Here, you'll see a new report named Retail Analysis Sample. Now explore the dashboard, dataset, and report on your own. There are many different ways to navigate to your dashboards, reports, and datasets. One of these ways is described in the following procedure. Navigate back to the Dashboards tab, and then select the Retail Analysis Sample dashboard to open it. Select one of the tiles in the dashboard to open the underlying report. The report opens to the page that contains the area chart you selected; in this case, the District Monthly Sales page of the report.

When someone shares a content pack with colleagues, they typically want to share only the insights, rather than provide direct access to the data. On the Datasets tab, you have several options for exploring your dataset. One way of exploring the dataset is by creating your own visualizations and reports from scratch. Select the chart icon to open the dataset in report editing mode. Another way of exploring the dataset is to run quick insights.

Select More options When the insights are ready, select View insights. When you first open the sample. Report view provides almost the same design experience as a report's Editing view in the Power BI service. You can move visualizations around, copy and paste, merge, and so on.

Unlike editing a report in the Power BI service, in Power BI Desktop you can also work with your queries and model your data to ensure your data supports the best insights in your reports. You can then save your Power BI Desktop file wherever you like, whether it's to your local drive or to the cloud. Download the Retail Analysis sample.

The file opens in Report view. Notice the four tabs at the bottom of the report editor; these tabs represent the four pages in this report. For this example, the New Stores page is currently selected. For a deep dive into the report editor, see Take a tour of the report editor. When you download a sample. When you open the file, Power BI Desktop loads the data with its associated queries and relationships.

You can view the underlying data and relationships, but you can't view the underlying queries in the Query Editor. Switch to Data view by selecting the table icon.It includes a simple experience for creating a new ML model where analysts can use their dataflows to specify the input data for training the model. The service automatically extracts the most relevant features, selects an appropriate algorithm, and tunes and validates the ML model. After a model is trained, Power BI automatically generates a performance report that includes the results of the validation.

The model can then be invoked on any new or updated data within the dataflow. Automated machine learning is available for dataflows that are hosted on Power BI Premium and Embedded capacities only.

Power BI dataflows offers self-serve data prep for big data. AutoML is integrated into dataflows and enables you to leverage your data prep effort for building machine learning models, right within Power BI.

It has guardrails to ensure that the model produced has good quality and provides visibility into the process used to create your ML model. These are types of supervised machine learning techniques, which means that they learn from the known outcomes of past observations to predict the outcomes of other observations. The input dataset for training an AutoML model is a set of records that are labeled with the known outcomes. AutoML emphasizes explainability by highlighting the key influencers among your inputs that influence the predictions returned by your model.

The report also includes key metrics for the model. Other pages of the generated report show the statistical summary of the model and the training details. The statistical summary is of interest to users who would like to see the standard data science measures of model performance.

The training details summarize all the iterations that were run to create your model, with the associated modeling parameters. It also describes how each input was used to create the ML model. You can then apply your ML model to your data for scoring. When the dataflow is refreshed, your data is updated with predictions from your ML model. Power BI also includes an individualized explanation for each specific prediction that the ML model produces.

To create a machine learning model in Power BI, you must first create a dataflow for the data containing the historical outcome information, which is used for training the ML model. You should also add calculated columns for any business metrics that may be strong predictors for the outcome you're trying to predict.Enable everyone at every level of your organization to make confident decisions using up-to-the-minute analytics.

Each sample represents a different industry. You can engage with each in different formats:. The company obviEnce www. The data is anonymized and represents different industries: finance, HR, sales, and more. Each of these samples is available in several formats: as a content pack, as an Excel workbook, and as a Power BI.

If you don't know what these things are, or how to get your hands on them -- don't worry. This article explains it all. For each of these samples, we've created a tour. Tours are articles that tell the story behind the sample and walk you through different scenarios.

One scenario might be answering questions for your manager, another might be looking for competitive insights, or creating reports and dashboards to share, or explaining a business shift. Before we get started, here are the legal guidelines for using these samples. With Power BI real-time streaming, you can stream data and update dashboards in real-time.

Any visual or dashboard that can be created in Power BI can also be created to display and update real-time data and visuals. The devices and sources of streaming data can be factory sensors, social media sources, service usage metrics, and anything else from which time-sensitive data can be collected or transmitted. This article shows you how to set up real-time streaming dataset in Power BI.

But before we get to that, it's important to understand the types of real-time datasets that are designed to display in tiles and dashboardsand how those datasets differ. There are three types of real-time datasets which are designed for display on real-time dashboards:. First let's understand how these datasets differ from one another this sectionthen we discuss how to push data into those each of these datasets. With a push datasetdata is pushed into the Power BI service.

When the dataset is created, the Power BI service automatically creates a new database in the service to store the data. Since there is an underlying database that continues to store the data as it comes in, reports can be created with the data. These reports and their visuals are just like any other report visuals, which means you can use all of Power BI's report building features to create visuals, including Power BI visuals, data alerts, pinned dashboard tiles, and more.

Once a report is created using the push dataset, any of its visuals can be pinned to a dashboard. On that dashboard, visuals update in real-time whenever the data is updated. Within the service, the dashboard is triggering a tile refresh every time new data is received. With a streaming datasetdata is also pushed into the Power BI service, with an important difference: Power BI only stores the data into a temporary cache, which quickly expires.

The temporary cache is only used to display visuals which have some transient sense of history, such as a line chart that has a time window of one hour. With a streaming datasetthere is no underlying database, so you cannot build report visuals using the data that flows in from the stream. As such, you cannot make use of report functionality such as filtering, Power BI visuals, and other report functions.

The only way to visualize a streaming dataset is to add a tile and use the streaming dataset as a custom streaming data data source. The custom streaming tiles that are based on a streaming dataset are optimized for quickly displaying real-time data.

There is very little latency between when the data is pushed into the Power BI service and when the visual is updated, since there's no need for the data to be entered into or read from a database. In practice, streaming datasets and their accompanying streaming visuals are best used in situations when it is critical to minimize the latency between when data is pushed and when it is visualized. In addition, it's best practice to have the data pushed in a format that can be visualized as-is, without any additional aggregations.

Examples of data that's ready as-is include temperatures, and pre-calculated averages. As with the streaming datasetwith the PubNub streaming dataset there is no underlying database in Power BI, so you cannot build report visuals against the data that flows in, and cannot take advantage of report functionality such as filtering, Power BI visuals, and so on. As such, the PubNub streaming dataset can also only be visualized by adding a tile to the dashboard, and configuring a PubNub data stream as the source.

Tiles based on a PubNub streaming dataset are optimized for quickly displaying real-time data. Since Power BI is directly connected to the PubNub data stream, there is very little latency between when the data is pushed into the Power BI service and when the visual is updated. The following table or matrix, if you like describes the three types of datasets for real-time streaming, and lists capabilities and limitations of each.

See this article for information on Push limits on how much data can be pushed in. The previous section described the three primary types of real-time datasets you can use in real-time streaming, and how they differ.

This section describes how to create and push data into those datasets. If no defaultMode flag is set, the dataset defaults to a push dataset. If the defaultMode value is set to pushStreamingthe dataset is both a push and streaming dataset, providing the benefits of both dataset types.

When using datasets with the defaultMode flag set to pushStreamingif a request exceeds the 15Kb size restriction for a streaming dataset, but is less than the 16MB size restriction of a push dataset, the request will succeed and the data will be updated in the push dataset.

However, any streaming tiles will temporarily fail. When creating the new streaming dataset, you can select to enable Historic data analysis as shown below, which has a significant impact. When Historic data analysis is disabled it is disabled by defaultyou create a streaming dataset as described earlier in this article.Discover how familiar tools and intuitive features make it easy to create reports, collaborate on dashboards, and administrate business intelligence BI across your organization.
